Travel the Carolinas: On a budget

High Rock Lake
Citizens looking for an inexpensive day's worth of fun can look no further than High Rock Lake. High Rock Lake, located off N.C. 8 South, offers public access areas for swimming and fishing.
The lake is operated by Alcoa Power Generating Inc. The building of High Rock Dam on the Yadkin River in the 1920s created High Rock Lake, a hydroelectric reservoir supplying electricity to an aluminum smelting operation in Badin. High Rock Lake is North Carolina's second largest lake covering 15,180 acres with over 365 miles of shoreline offering visitors to Davidson County outstanding recreational opportunities, which include boating, sailing, water skiing, fishing, picnicking and swimming. The lake bills itself as everyone having “a place at the lake.” Alcoa provides four public recreation facilities at the lake, providing day visitors convenient access to everything the lake has to offer, including bank fishing, picnic tables and boat access. Two of these facilities provide swimming in marked swimming areas during the summer season.
